Dental Crowns
What is a dental crown, and when would I need one?
A dental crown will restore the shape and function of broken or a badly decayed tooth.
A dental crown or cap is a tooth-shaped restoration which is placed on top of a functionally compromised tooth or implant, and completely covers it. Teeth which are broken, cracked, badly decayed, or heavily filled can be restored, protected, and stabilised by crowning them.
What is a crown is made of?
Dental crowns are made of metal, porcelain, or both, where porcelain is fused on the metal. The material that your dentist chooses for your crown will very much depend on your own individual needs, however the most common material to be used is porcelain.
Full porcelain crowns look as real as your own tooth due to their translucency, which is similar to natural teeth.
How long will a crown last, and how I should care for my crown?
The longevity of the crown depends on how well you will look after it at home. Properly cared for crowns last 10-15 years or longer, which means they are a long-term treatment solution for compromised teeth. To prolong the durability of the crown, you will need to make sure that you have good oral hygiene to prevent caries developing at the junction of the crown and the tooth.
